This Regulation concerns the following commodities and related agrifood products: cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soya and wood. Publication means the timetable for meeting the new requirements is now clear. From 30 December 2024, operators in these value chains must be able to demonstrate that commodities and products exported to the EU are “deforestation-free” (were produced on land on which no deforestation has taken place after 31 December 2020) and “legal” (produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production).
The European Commission intends to publish soon a Frequently Asked Questions document that will respond to some of the questions that are being asked by governments and operators about the new rules. Sector-specific guidance documents, that will help with the implementation of the new rules, are also expected to be endorsed at a later stage by the European Commission.
